Scabies on Dogs

When it comes to information about scabies, one of the biggest misconceptions is that dogs can give humans scabies. Although it seems like a logical point, it is physiologically not possible. Various forms of the scabies mite can infest dogs, along with other mammals such as cats, ferrets and pigs. However, these mite variations are unable to reproduce on humans, and can only live on their host animal. The only interaction between the mites that can infest dogs and humans is the possibility of one of these mites biting a human. Although a bite from one of these mites may cause a small irritation, it will not develop into scabies.

The effect of scabies on dogs is quite different from that of humans. In many cases, scabies become a much more serious issue in dogs. When a dog becomes infested with mites, the mites are able to quickly reproduce and spread all over the dog. Common signs of scabies in dogs include a foul stench, loss of hair and an elephant-like gray skin. If you see any of these signs in your dog, it is important to take action to minimize the effects of the mites. As with humans, the best option is to allow trained professionals to care for your dog. However, if you do not want to get involved with a veterinarian, there are several steps you can take on your own to help your dog out. In addition to thoroughly cleaning and fumigating your dog and its living area, there are a variety of lotions and bottled treatments which are designed to help your dog get rid of its scabies. When you are dealing with a dog that has scabies, the most important thing is to be aware of your dog's condition and ensure that it does not take a turn for the worse.
