Scabies Overview

Scabies is an unfortunate medical condition that is almost always marked by a prominent, uncomfortable rash. Scabies occurs when an almost microscopic mite ( known as a Sarcoptes scabiei) burrows into the skin. There are variety of places the mite may choose to burrow, including the fingers, genitals and toes, but regardless of where the mite selects its entry location, the same event always takes place. Once the mite makes its way into the skin, the body reacts by flaring up and causing a rash around the mite's burrow. In addition to often being quite unsightly, the rash that accompanies scabies is marked by a consistent itching sensation. This itching sensation can actually continue for weeks after the physical signs have disappeared.

Scabies is a very contagious condition and can be easily transmitted through almost any skin to skin contact. In a few cases, it has been reported that scabies was actually contracted from an object, such as a towel or t-shirt, where the mite was residing. These cases truly are rare because the mites that cause scabies only have a two day life expectancy when they are away from a human host. Scabies are actually quite common in children, which poses a significant issue for their teachers. Children are especially prone to an excess of touching and sharing, and if one is carrying the scabies mite, it is almost guaranteed that he will pass it on to at least a handful of his classmates.
